How To Find Electrical Services
Whether you are building a house, putting on an addition, or need to add wiring and upgrade your electrical capacity to handle new appliances, you should be considering the services of a professional electrician. Electricity is such an integral part of our lives that we don’t realize that we are completely surrounded by it. As useful as electricity is in our everyday it can be dangerous in when handled improperly. Failure to realize the dangers involved in electricity can result in disasters such as electrocution, and building consuming fires. This is the reason why most electrical work is best left in the hands of a professional.
There are several things to consider before hiring an electrician. You need to understand current needs and anticipate what your needs may be in the future. An electrician is experienced and qualified to make suggestions but you will know best what your needs will be.
What to do before hiring an electrician:
Evaluate your needs. You may need simple repairs or upgrades, or you may be adding new rooms and outlets. Get a list so you don’t miss anything. An electrician won’t be able to tell you what you want.
- If you are renovating be sure to consider expansion needs. It is far less costly to add more outlets now than to add them later. Your electrician will be able to guide you but you need to evaluate realistically.
- Find a qualified electrician. This means an electrician who is licensed and insured. Remember if anyone uninsured is injured on your property you will be held liable for damages.
- Finding an electrician can be tricky. Your best bet is to ask friends and family if they recommend any qualified electricians. The yellow pages are a good source as well.
- Ask about how many years the electrician has been in business. The electrician should be able to provide at least 3 references for you on request.
- Provide the electrician with your job list and have him do a walk through before he bids on the job.
- Draft and execute a contract that stipulates cost, payment schedule, and estimated start and end dates, as well as workmanship guarantees.
- Review all of your specifications with the electrician to determine if any additional work is required to support it.
- Review and test the completed work before submitting your final payment to the contractor.
Finding a quality electrician can save you a lot of money and aggravation.
